Israel’s first “Lebowski Fest,” in celebration of Ethan and Joel Coen’s 1998 film “The Big Lebowski,” will be held next week in Jerusalem. The cult comedy has spawned Lebowski festivals around the world over the past decade, notably in the United States and recently also in London.

The first Lebowski fest was held in 2002 in Kentucky, followed by a number of cities including New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Austin (Texas ), Seattle, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco. The event is being publicized mainly through Facebook.

The film follows the life of main character Jeffrey Lebowski, played by Jeff Bridges, who goes by the name “The Dude.” Lebowski is an aging hippie who mostly passes his time smoking marijuana and bowling with his Vietnam War veteran friend Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman ) and another friend, Donny Kerabatsos (played by Steve Buscemi ).

In the spirit of the film, the festival in Jerusalem, which will take place on Thursday of next week, will be held at a bowling alley in the city’s Talpiot industrial zone. In addition to a showing of the movie, there will be a bowling tournament, a costume contest built around the characters in the film and a trivia contest. The event organizers also promise a steady supply of “The Dude’s” favorite drink, White Russian.

Tickets are only available in advance at NIS 60 per person, which includes one White Russian, or NIS 90, which includes participation in the bowling tournament and unlimited White Russian.

Israeli-born Oscar-winning actress becomes mother for the first time, report says; place and time of birth still not known.

LOS ANGELES – Actress Natalie Portman has given birth to a baby boy fathered by a choreographer she met while she filmed her Oscar-winning role in Black Swan, People magazine reported on Tuesday.

The report did not say where or when the birth took place, and there was no immediate comment from Portman’s publicist.

Portman, who turned 30 last Thursday, announced in December that she was pregnant and planned to marry her boyfriend, French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

The two worked together on Black Swan, in which Portman played a self-mutilating ballerina. She won the Academy Award for her performance in February.

The Israeli-born, New York-raised actress rose to fame playing the preteen protegee of a hitman in The Professional, and appeared in the Star Wars reboots as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia’s mother. She was most recently in theaters with the romantic comedy No Strings Attached.
