The first time I heard Jesse Palter sing and Sam Barsh play, I was at awe, these two talented individuals have brought modern Jazz to a whole new level. So when I heard they were playing at the Red Sea Jazz festival in Eilat, it was the perfect opportunity to showcase their music and talent to you. So I contacted them, and below a little taste of Jesse and Sam
To start tell us about Jesse Palter and the Alter Ego…
This unique project is the vibrant and groovy baby of two distinct, independent artists: Jesse Palter and Sam Barsh. Palter is a vocalist and composer; Barsh is a pianist and composer. Their connection has an arrogant character with a punch to it. In a sophisticated manner, their music manages to integrate rhythms of Pop with the beat of club music and Hip Hop improvisations, while preserving the deep roots of the world of Jazz and Soul. With a refined musical production and heartbreaking lyrics, this is Pop-Jazz which provides moments of perfect joy and cheer. Palter is a vocalist with a flexible and flowing voice, with a broad range and stylistic richness. She began to sing in front of audiences at the age of 5, and to play piano at the age of 6. At the same time, she also learned to play the oboe and the trumpet. She played in theater productions and discovered her natural attraction to Jazz and improvisation. Barsh, who is a performing artist with all his body and soul, grew up in the Chicago area, began playing piano at the age of 4 and then continued to every instrument with keys that produces sound. On the back side of his premiere disc, Barsh was photographed in the nude, like a newborn, with a Melodica covering his shame.
What attracts you to Jazz versus other styles ?
The thing that most attracts me to jazz is the freedom of the music; the ability to create spontaneously on stage with musicians that are of a high level. In jazz the music is different every night and that’s exciting!
You will be playing at the Red Sea Jazz Festival, tell us about the festival and how you got involved
The Red Sea Jazz Fest is the biggest jazz festival in Israel! For more information click here: http://www.redseajazzeilat.
Are you writing original content for the festival ? Will we get to hear you singing in Hebrew or just the sporadic Shalom ?
We will be premiering some of our new material at this festival. So excited and honored to be here! Though our songs aren’t in Hebrew, I’ve learned a couple of choice phrases to say to the audience.
Will this be your first time playing in Israel ?
This is our first time playing with our band in Israel. Sam has performed various times in the past and I got to do a little of music making while I was here on birthright.
What are you most excited about doing while you’re in Israel (DO/SEE)
It’s a very short trip. After 28 hours of travel to get here, I’m excited to sleep. Eat some great food. Spend some time at the beach. Interact with interesting people and most of all, to perform!
