Israeli swimmer and European champion Jonathan Koplev will miss the Olympic games in London after having his appendix removed in an emergency operation.
Koplev was rushed to hospital on Sunday, and had hoped to be released in time to join the team flying to London. On Wednesday he was still under care, however, and his coaches announced that he would not participate in the 2012 games.
Koplev won the gold medal in the 50 meter backstroke at the 2012 European championships, and was one of six swimmers on Israel’s delegation to the games.
The remaining five swimmers were flying to London on Thursday, ahead of the opening of the games on July 27.
