Three new renewable energy projects were launched in the Negev last week, with a NIS 270 million (roughly $72 million) investment by the French national electricity company Electricite de France SA (EDF).
The venture, which will see three new solar fields built in the Negev communities of Gvulot, Nahal Oz and Lahav will become operational within six months and produce 18 megawatts of electricity each. In total 75,000 solar panels manufactured in France were installed in the fields.
Energy and Water Minister Uzi Landau, French Ambassador to Israel Christophe Bigot and EDF Energies Nouvelle Israeli CEO Ayalon Vaniche attended the inauguration ceremony.
“The new arrays are the first of many more ventures that EDF will set up in Israel in the coming year,” Vaniche said.
The venture, he added, “reflects EDF’s long-term confidence in the Israeli economy and its huge potential in the field of energy. We see the local communities as strategic partners in these facilities and we have decided that their operation will favor local suppliers and workers.”
The France-based EDF is one of the world’s largest alternative energy companies.

How will Greenbo revolutionize gardening?
Greenbo revolutionizes gardening by changing the perception of growing vegetables, flowers and plants in an urban environment, bringing nature into your apartment in an innovative attractive way.
The Greenbo planters and flower boxes patented design allows it to be placed over any shape or form of railings without a need for special adjustments or effort. With a variety of 16 vivid colors, High end plastic polymers, and advanced planter mechanisms: Stability ribs mechanism, Water recycling and more, Greenbo is a world leader in the urban gardening domain.
Who came up with the concept/design, what was your inspiration?
I came up with the Greenbo railing & deck planter concept from a real need\problem I had trying to grow my herbs and vegetables in my small apartment’s balcony while living in Tel-Aviv for many years.
Design and gardening were not my specialty. After completing my first degree, I got a job in the Hi-tech industry, for years I bounced from start-up to startup, filing different roles and climbing up to managerial roles.
After years of hard work and long hours working and achieving for the companies I worked for, I realized I could do the same things and better on my own. I decided to pursue my dream and study design (…which was always a hobby of mine) and so I did. As a gardener and design graduate, I was really amazed how many things can be created differently, with more design, more colors, more efficiency and simplicity. That was the moment I knew I was going to start my own business based on my ideas in the product design field.
The idea for Greenbo came as I was renting an apartments in Tel Aviv. The rent was expensive and the apartments were very small, I remember I could barely stand in my balcony. As a nature lover living in an urban environment, I really wanted to grow my own garden and so I insisted on doing so. So I started thinking creatively on how I could keep my small apt/balcony and still have a lovely garden with flowers and colors.
I started playing around with all kinds of ideas but at that point the only products available were the chip regular window boxes with metal hangers. I bought one and hanged it on my railing facing the street. I was amazed that the only color available at the time was white, dark green and terracotta brown which were terrible.
After hanging it I discovered few things:
1/ The window box was directed to the street and located beneath the railing so I couldn’t enjoy my flowers.
2/ Both the metal hangers and my railing got rusted.
3/ It was very unstable, a little disturbance and it could fall down
4/ It was not asthetically pleasing, to enjoy it, I had to cover it with HUGE flowers.
That was the moment I realized I have the perfect solution. While looking at the 2 regular flower boxes hanging facing each other (the street and the balcony), I’ve noticed the saddle shape they created, with that in mind, I decided to design a on-top railing flower box, made only of plastic with no metal hangers including a rib safety mechanism. In addition to the mechanism, I gave it a state of the art design available in many colours, making the flower box a designed object on its own. We made it wide enough to be able grow flowers but narrow enough to not to take too much space (…space is precious in Tel Aviv), and from there Greenbo started its urban gardening revolution. 2 of my best friends joined me Maya Golan & Meir Haklai and I convinced my father, Avi Joulus to come along on our journey, together we established Greenbo, an Innovative Israeli design global leading company.

Are you inspired more by Design or Gardening ?
I was inspired by the combination of creativity and nature completing each other.
I love nature, flowers, and plants and wanted to keep it in my life though living in an urban environment. I’ve also been designing for years always looking to bring clean designs and efficiency to my life. Once facing the need to solve the problem I had, I really felt that with the combination of these 2 hobbies I can bring innovative, simple solution for growing my own garden in the city.
The solution was so simple and so “reality demanding” that since day one I thought about it, it felt right.
Gardening is a way of natural design AND design is really using the beauty of nature, all is needed is keeping it simple, clever and always inspire to improve while keeping the environment natural and sustainable.
People are more and more interested in products that are environmentally friendly, what makes Greenbo GREEN ?
Greenbo cares about green environment and act according to the “Sustainability” ecological economics principles, by using high quality & recycled materials to ensure long lasting product life cycle.
Product life cycle
Greenbo planters and flower boxes are very solid, making them safe in extreme weather conditions over high floor buildings, in addition Greenbo products have a life cycle of more than 3 years, compared to the 1 year life-cycle of a regular planter, resulting in a lot less plastic waste.

Recycled materials and recycled products
All Greenbo products that are returned to us are recycled and used to manufacture other products. In addition, Greenbo’s white and black products are manufactured from recycled materials

Saving water and recycled water
Greenbo products have 2 removable drainage trays that the extra water drains to.
The extra water can be reused either on the same planter or on the one next to it. We wanted to give people the option of re-using water.
In addition, the roots of the plants are totally separated from the extra water allowing the plants to grow better and safer.

What do you mean when you say “Ecological economics principles” and how do you follow them ?
As stated above, at Greenbo we care a lot about the environment so we are implemented “Sustainability” ecological economics principles from our initial design and planning process.
Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony which permits a fulfillment of the social, economic and other requirements for the present generations to come.
In brief, there are two major ways of managing human impact on ecosystem services.
One approach is environmental management; this approach is based largely on information gained from educated professionals in earth science, environmental science, and conservation biology.
Another approach is management of consumption of resources, which is based largely on information gained from educated professionals in economics.
All of the above reflects the real revolution in Greenbo products embracing the main “Sustainability” principle of
Management of consumption of resources:
From the early stages of our product design we insist of bringing and designing our products to be environmental friendly. Besides the “green” mechanisms in our product like grey water recycle mechanism, Greenbo is very strict regarding the earth resources and continuity.
Many of the Greenbo products are made from recycled plastic materials, but not only this, each product returned to us or any damaged product from the production processes, recycled and new different product are manufactured from it, so every resource taken from our ground is used for eternity saving the resources and keeping our planet greener and stronger. In addition, Greenbo implement one of the most important “Sustainability” principals of smart quality consuming, which means that each product produced must be in high quality and last for years and by that saving return purchase of cheaper low quality product and wasting the plant resources. In the last few years the attitude of purchasing cheap, low level, un-designed product become very common and caused a major waste in our earth resources consumption. In Greenbo we have decided to change it. We design a very thick product, with extreme high quality which made the product highly durable and lasting for years keeping top quality and design. This non-economic step created a different environmental change, instead of buying in 3 years 10 cheap planters that will waste huge amount of the earth resources, you can buy 1 Greenbo product which will last for years. To see the world wide consumers today understating the importance of “Sustainability”, appreciate it and purchasing our product not only for its design and functionality but for a global cause like our environment and green earth is a rewarding exciting moment for us all.

With its wide expanses of open space and ever-increasing energy needs, India would be an ideal place for Israeli renewable energy innovators to take their business, experts from both sides of the equation agreed on Tuesday.
Representatives from both the Indian and Israeli governments, as well as leaders from around 50 Israeli renewable energy companies, gathered on Tuesday morning in Tel Aviv to discuss such opportunities – which seem to be plentiful. India is an enormous country where 400 million people still lack access to electricity, and despite already relying on renewable sources for 6 percent of its 200-gigawatt power supply, the country still depends on oil for the vast majority of its energy needs, according to Ashwani Kumar, a solar energy scientist at the New and Renewable Energy Ministry of India.
“Israel is a start-up nation, and both the people and the country are known for innovation,” said Vani Rao, charge d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv. “India has put energy security on the top of its agenda.”
To this effect, Gireesh Pradhan, secretary of India’s New and Renewable Energy Ministry, was visiting Israel on Monday and Tuesday with a delegation from his office to examine cooperation opportunities between the two countries. A portion of that visit included meeting with a roundtable of Israeli industry leaders on Tuesday morning.
“As we complete 20 years as an embassy, we are thinking of what we can do together [with the Israeli government] in the future,” Rao said. “One of the areas we have identified is renewable energy.”
Pradhan, who is on his first visit to Israel, said he was very pleased to see the large turnout of Israeli renewable entrepreneurs and business leaders, and that the numbers nothing less than “overwhelmed” him.
“I frankly did not expect the kind of interest that I see around this table,” he said.
Forging partnerships with energy innovators such as those in Israel is crucial, as nearly 40% of the Indian population does not have access to electricity, Pradhan stressed.
“India is a very vast country and like all vast countries has very vast problems,” he said.
“Energy is one of the most crucial issues, which we feel could do wonders for us but could also act as the biggest holdback.”
As the situation has become critical, the ministry – the only renewable energy ministry in the entire world – is eager “to provide energy access to our population at the earliest,” Pradhan added.
To accomplish this in the short and medium term, renewable energy methods will be key, according to Pradhan.
Of India’s already existing 25.857 gigawatts of installed renewable energy, 17.967 are from wind, 3.412 are from biomass, 3.434 of small hydroelectric and only 1.044 from solar sources, Kumar told the Israelis. While solar is relatively new in India, Kumar said that he believes it will become increasingly important as per the ministry’s future renewable energy plans. The ministry estimates a potential for 30 to 50 megawatts per square kilometer worth of solar energy in India, amounting to a projected total capacity of 10 gigawatts by 2017 and 20 gigawatts by 2022.
Increasing the presence of solar facilities, as well as biomass, hydroelectric and wind structures, will help the ministry achieve its target of grid parity – when alternative energy sources can be purchased for similar prices to conventional ones – by 2022, according to Kumar. In order to accomplish this, the Indian government is issuing a number of subsidies, such as those for off-grid solar development in rural communities, and is also reducing custom fees, nixing excise duties and providing tax exemptions for imported machinery associated with initial solar power station setup, Kumar explained.
Within the next five years, the ministry aims to install another 30 gigawatts worth of renewable energy total – primarily through private sources, Pradhan explained.
“The important difference in India between conventional and renewable power is that for conventional power the lead is the government or the public sector, and for renewables it is the private sector,” Pradhan said. “In that context we look to partnering with countries such as Israel.”
In India, there are bounds of land that could be put to no use other than building solar fields, as well as a vast array of other renewable energy opportunities, and Pradhan said he believes that Israeli technology and ideas should be employed in consonance with this advantage.
“Israel has the ability to innovate under very trying circumstances,” Pradhan said. “The constraints that your country has faced and the ability to deal with these constraints and produce out-of-the-box solutions are well known.”
Yifat Inbar, manager of the India-China desk and director of the Foreign Trade Administration at the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry, assured the business people and entrepreneurs sitting around the table that her ministry was there to help them take up such opportunities.
Her office, she explained, would be helping forge dialogues, ease access the Indian market, get in touch with local players and generally “facilitate that connection which we know is very difficult to make.”
Placing a great value on Israel and India’s trade that continues to improve and flourish, Inbar attributed Israel’s ability to largely evade the world financial crisis in part to its success in trading with Asian countries such as India. Currently, the two governments are in the process of negotiating an agreement to reduce customs levels between the two nations in order to bring about free trade, she said.
Innovators and business people from all sides of the renewable energy industry presented themselves to the Indian delegation, eager to create partnerships and bring their technologies to the subcontinent.
Representatives attended from defense company Rafael, which is developing technology for fuel substitutes; energy storage startup EnStorage; photovoltaic field developer Arava Power Company; solar-thermal firms Ener-T Global and HelioFocus; solar panel enhancer Solar Edge; and from all corners of the solar, wind, biomass and capital investment industries.
“India is a very important country for renewable energy market. We are actively pursuing opportunities there,” Dr. Daniel Farb, CEO and founder of Leviathan Energy – for wind and hydroelectric power – told The Jerusalem Post.
Ultimately, both sides expressed enthusiasm about the partnerships they anticipated would result from the roundtable and the visit, the highest-level renewable delegation ever to come to Israel from India.
“Energy is the flavor of the month,” said Anat Bernstein- Reich, vice president of the Israel-Asia Chamber of Commerce and president of the Israel-India Friendship Association. “Israel has the need and developed the solutions. India has the need and we don’t want you to develop your own solutions.”

The cabinet authorized the “Green Government Project” last week, which will see the various ministries adopt eco-friendly practices for their daily operations.
The Environmental Protection Ministry, which spearheaded the initiative, said the new regulations’ implementation is likely to save the government NIS 20 million (roughly $5 million) a year.
According to the ministry, the project’s pilot, launched in 2011, which had ministries use less power and water and opt for biodegradable office supplies, saved the government NIS 12.3 million ($3 million).
“This serves as yet another proof that green consumerism is good for the budget as well as for the environment,” Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan said.
“The public’s money does not have to be wasted because of old-fashioned, polluting behavior.”
The Green Government Project will require ministries to increase their use of green supplies by 5% in 2013 and by up to 20% by 2020.

Worldwide, hundreds of billions of dollars have been invested in finding a solution to the water shortage; creating alternative energy sources; combating air pollution; and energy efficiency. The 16th annual CleanTech expo, held this month in Tel Aviv, was a mecca for anyone seeking to increase efficiency, save money, and “green up” his or her lifestyle, as well as providing a marketing edge.
The expo displayed a number of green solutions, including water technologies; gas and sewage infrastructures; options for green building, wastewater treatment, recycling, and gardening.
Among the technologies Ynet discovered at the show were two-sided solar kits and mobile solar units that provide electricity for home use.
CleanTech founder Haim Allush described it as an excellent opportunity to network and hold business meetings with senior decision-makers in the industrial sector and in local and national government, as well as with researchers and investors from Israel and abroad.
